[1] Greetings.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi All:
I'm in Washington DC today. Hope this gets out OK.
List member Richard Woolnough gives us some humor with the Best Business
Name of 2004 contest. Very cute.
Nice to know that online shopping is expected to be great this holiday
season. Then again, doesn't everybody shop online? I know we will do all
of our shopping online this year, as we have the past couple of
years. Ours is a simple reason - our family is spread out throughout the
U.S. - five kids in five states.
I also find online shopping to be extremely convenient. Today I had to get
some imprinted envelopes and called our local Staples. I was told I had to
come into the store. So I went online, found a great price from a company
we did business in the past and ordered. Delivery in 3 days.
You know my feelings about RFID and how I believe it is the next big thing
in retailing. Well, a new survey indicates there are some significant
savings and a lot of organizations will embrace RFID in the next year.
65 days until Christmas. What are you doing this year to increase business?
Tell us about your business which will remain for posterity at
our "Members: Who Are You?"
site. http://etailersdigest.com/resources/members/index.htm And we have a
form there for you to tell us about you. As I said when I first proposed
this idea, we have "known" each other for a long time, yet we often don't
know anything about each other. So, tell us who you are and what you do.
Now, let's get to everything for the retailer.
Sincerely
George Matyjewicz, PhD

[2] Best Business Name 2004
----------------------------------------------------------------
Was browsing on line today and caught this article from the UK
http://tinyurl.com/622ox
It is a little Brit-centric in the choice of some of the names but I am
sure that many of your readers might get a smile out of it. We e-tailers
need every opportunity to smile that we can get!
BTW That TinyUrl site is really good if you want to cut down a long link
address. The original for the Press Release was 119 characters and was cut
down to 24. Just go in to the site, enter the long URL (cut and paste is
easiest) and the TinyUrl is generated. The great news is that it is free!
Best regards
Richard Woolnough

[3] Online Shoppers Lead the Charge for an Early Start to the Holidays
----------------------------------------------------------------
--Survey Finds 98% of Merchants Expect Online Sales Growth--
The 2004 Shop.org/BizRate.com Online Holiday Mood Study found that 98
percent of merchants are anticipating online growth this holiday season.
Also, 32 percent of consumers plan to do more of their holiday shopping
online this year.
Consumers who shop online are more likely to start their holiday shopping
earlier than consumers who shop at traditional brick-and-mortar stores. And
despite a common misconception that retailers start their holiday
promotions earlier every year, 72 percent plan to begin holiday marketing
at the same time as last year. Over half of online retailers (53%) will
wait until after Halloween to begin promoting the holiday season, though
most online shoppers will have started their shopping nearly a month
before. According to the survey, 53 percent of online shoppers plan to
begin their holiday shopping by early October, when only 14 percent of
merchants will have launched their online holiday marketing promotions.
"Online shoppers seem to be leading the charge to start the holiday season
earlier every year," said Scott Silverman, Executive Director of Shop.org.
"Online retailers who wait until November to begin holiday promotions might
miss out on sales opportunities."
This year, consumers will be relying on the Internet in a variety of ways.
More than half of online shoppers plan to use the Internet more than last
holiday season to comparison shop (89%), research gifts for others (86%),
buy gifts for others (74%), and buy gifts for themselves (53%).
"The online sector is quickly becoming a one-stop shopping destination for
consumers," said Chuck Davis, CEO of BizRate.com. "Even consumers who may
ultimately buy in the store are using the Internet to compare prices or
research products."
About the Survey
The Online Holiday Mood Study is the only holiday measurement tool that is
based on data provided directly from online retailers in addition to
consumer data. The Shop.org/BizRate.com 2004 Holiday Online Mood Study was
designed to gauge consumer behavior and online retailers' success during
the winter holiday season. The poll of 1,722 online buyers (defined as
anyone who has made a purchase online in the last twelve months) and more
than 100 online retailers, all members of Shop.org, was conducted September
22-23.

[4] Inventory Reduction Drives RFID Adoption for 2004
----------------------------------------------------------------
The 2004 Tech Trends Report from Consumer Goods and AMR Research sheds
some much-needed light on how the consumer goods industry is adapting to
RFID. More than 160 high-level consumer goods executives with significant
IT responsibility completed the survey form. Here are a few key findings:
o The No. 1 return on investment anticipated from RFID is inventory
reduction at 28 percent of respondents. This is also the foundation of most
retailer's business case, where inventory visibility leads to decreased
stock-outs, which is reported as the No. 3 anticipated benefit at 17 percent.
o This year, companies are spending 2 percent of their IT budgets on RFID
projects. RFID budgets are expected to grow significantly in 2005.
Enterprise companies, those with revenues over $500 million, expect to
budget much more next year, reporting an increase of 24 percent. This
compares to mid-market manufacturers who expect budgets to rise 12 percent.
"While we would expect spending to increase, the fact is that implementing
RFID beyond compliance-only strategy will take even more of an investment
than most companies seem to be budgeting for," says Kara Romanow of AMR
Research.
o More than half of survey respondents are implementing RFID as a direct
result of customer mandates. On average, 22 percent of companies surveyed
will be implementing in 2004, the majority of them larger enterprise
companies. Mid-market companies pick up the pace in 2004 with evaluations,
when most are impacted by customer mandates.
