UCS/WINS Communication Standard

The following statements are included in the "Communication Standard" section of the UCS and WINS Standards Manual.

Objectives

The following objectives were considered in selecting the standard:

bulletThe use of proven widely available technologies, while also permitting migration to newer or more efficient technologies at a later date
bulletEnable participation by both large and small business entities, including distributors, brokers, and manufacturers
bulletProvide for implementation at a reasonable cost
bulletProvide a standard which includes minimum operational requirements such as network availability, response time to messages, and service levels for incoming telephone calls
bulletProvide data integrity and security which is equal to or better than that in existence under current methods of operation

Network Availability

The Mailbox must be available for data input as follows:
a) Direct Participants: 6:00 a.m. EST to Midnight EST--7 days a week.
b) Third Party/Service Bureau Participants: 6:00 a.m. EST to 3:00 a.m. EST--7 days a week.

The receiving telephone connection of a Mailbox must be available (not busy) 90% of the time during the peak traffic hour.

Security

A "Communications l.D." and "Password" can be sent in each transmission.

Transmissions are directed only to "inbound" mailboxes. The sending party always calls the receiving party and transmits the messages.

Network Response Time

Responses to standard messages must be sent no later than 12 hours after the originator's transmission.

Network Communications

The public telephone dial-up network.

Communications Speed

4800/9600 BPS

Transmission Mode

Full-Duplex Synchronous

Transmission Code

Binary Synchronous IBM 3780.

The Communications line protocol is further defined as 3780 Binary Synchronous point-to-point as described in IBM publications.

Alternative Asynchronous Standard

The UCS/WINS Communication Standard now includes an asynchronous option. The async standard is a subset of the ASC X125/94-554 X12 Guideline.

The async portion of the standard is available for optional use between consenting trading partners. The existing bisync portion of the standard remains mandatory.
