history of a makeover.
In reviewing sites
from a marketing point of view, we have found some common problems that
appear to be prevalent on most sites....
-
Links. A lot sites have links to other sites, i.e., a lawyer links to
legal resources on the Net, or a site may link to another favorite site.
These links were very common in 1995 and 1996, when the Net was not as
big. The problem you have with a link from your site to another is you
lose the visitor. Either use a "target" clause, frames or don't use
links.
-
Images. If you are using GIFS make sure they are transparent. There are
tools that make them transparent. Otherwise the background of the GIF
clashes with your background.
-
Meta Tags.
Learn what they are and why you need them. Without them you will not get
listed on many (most) search engines.
-
Pictures.
Why is your picture on your site? What purpose does it serve? If you do
have a good reason, make sure it is a clear picture.
-
URL.
If you're going to play in the big leagues, spend some money and get your
own URL. Visitors meet your firm for the first time over the Net, and are
getting a first impression over this 14" screen. Not a physical location
that they will visit. If I were swimming in that vast ocean, and
needed some help, I would hope that the help would come from somebody who
would go a little farther than putting his/her toe in the water.
There are a lot more specific issues, but these probably apply to most
sites.
